Ethiopia ranks 169 in Human Development - UN

Ethiopia is ranked at the bottom of human development in the recent Human Development Index (HDI) just published by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Ethiopia ranks 169th out of 177 countries, it moved up one place from last year. The data is based on 2005.

The HDI for Ethiopia is 0.406, which gives the country a rank of 169th out of 177 countries. In the four areas measured by UNDP, Ethiopia scored poorly in GDP per capita ($1,055), measured in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), ranking 162.

The second lowest ranking for Ethiopia is the Combined primary, secondary and tertiary gross enrollment ratio which puts Ethiopia at number 156 with just 42.1 percent enrollment rate.

In Life expectancy at birth(years), Ethiopia is ranked at 153 with the Life Expectancy at 51.8 years. In adult literacy rate, Ethiopia did better relatively, ranking 132 with 35.9% of Adult Literacy rate (% ages 15 and older)

The Human development Index (HDI) has been published annually since 1990 and it looks beyond GDP to a broader definition of well-being according to UNDP. The HDI provides a composite measure of three dimensions of human development: living a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy), being educated (measured by adult literacy and enrollment at the primary, secondary and tertiary level) and having a decent standard of living (measured by purchasing power parity, PPP, income), says the report from UNDP.
